3 participatory videos on family farming recognized by ComDev Asia

The participatory video entries of AMARC-Asia Pacific (Nepal) and two Regional Training Centers of the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute (Philippines) were selected by a panel of judges as Best Participatory Videos in the ComdevAsia Online Training on Participatory Video Production and Sharing held in November 2022.

The AMARC-Asia Pacific video featured how adopting available traditional knowledge can help in climate change adaptation. In their video, they showed how the conservation of stone spout in Dakshinkali Municipality has helped the community to have access to water throughout the year.

The entries from DA-ATI Regions V and VII highlighted how biodegradable wastes (kitchen wastes) are turned into useful bio-fertilizers and the promotion of digital farming technologies through the Digital Farmers Program, respectively.

The Best Participatory Video competition was part of the Online Training on Participatory Video Production and Sharing held by ComDev Asia in November 2022 which aimed to enhance capacities of practitioners, development workers, and family farmers and their organizations to appropriate and apply basic notions for the participatory use and sharing of video for development purposes.

The participatory video entries were evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Involvement of different stakeholders working together to solve an issue or concern
  • Use of elements of the community (language, geography, setting, persons, available resources, stories)
  • Relatability of content
  • Technical quality (effective use of video and audio elements)

Featuring family farmers through participatory videos

As an offshoot of the Comdev Asia Online Training on Participatory Video Production and Sharing held in November 2022, participants conceptualized and produced participatory videos showcasing different stories on family farming within their communities. Below are the other participatory videos produced by the participants:

The Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute Regional Training Center X’s entry showcased how the practice of integrated farming can help mitigate the impacts of climate change.

For the Community Self-Reliance Centre’s video, they featured the successful tomato farming of some of the locals whom they have extended support to. One of the locals shared that she is now able to make money from it.

In the collaborative entry of the Federation of Community Forestry Users Nepal and Forest and Farm Facility, they promoted organic farming as a way to healthy and long life. Locals who are into organic farming discussed the positive effects of the use of chemical- free products on human life.

Lastly, Wahana Masyarakat Tani dan Nelayan Indonesia’s video showcases stories of young coffee farmers who work to become successful despite the challenges they face. The video also showed good agricultural practices which can be replicated by other coffee farmers.
