Empowering Persons with Disabilities through Agriculture in Laos
The Lao Farmers Association (LFA) launched an initiative to empower persons with disabilities (PWDs) by providing opportunities in agricultural business. The project aims to create jobs for disabled individuals and build the capacity of 15 families with PWD members.
The initiative was carried out in partnership with the Saysetha District Disabled People’s Association and is implemented in Vientiane Capital. It follows a structured approach with four key steps:
- Selecting Target Families – A project outreach meeting was held to inform potential beneficiaries about the initiative’s objectives and conditions. Awareness was also raised through Facebook promotions. After this, 15 families were selected to participate.
- Market Survey and Business Needs Assessment – The Lao Farmers Association organized market survey training, study tours, and knowledge exchange sessions with successful farming groups. This step helped identify viable agricultural businesses, including crop cultivation, livestock raising, and food processing.
- Business Planning and Financial Management – Participants received training on developing business plans, production planning, and maintaining financial records to track income and expenses effectively.
- Agricultural Training – Beneficiaries were trained in agricultural techniques tailored to their chosen business plans. One key training focused on raising pigeons as a source of livelihood.
