Artificial Intelligence is a Tool, Not a Voice: AMARC Asia-Pacific Marks World Radio Day 2026
To mark the World Radio Day (WRD) 2026, the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters, AMARC (Asia-Pacific) launched a multi-day social media campaign highlighting the ethical use of AI in community radio. The core concept of the campaign was simple: AI can be a force for strengthening the quality of radio broadcasting when used ethically. However, AI should neverreplace real human voices. The campaign called for transparency, accuracy,
accessibility, and ethical use of AI. With a campaign slogan of ‘“AI is a tool, not a voice,’ the
Association aimed to contextualize AI to community broadcasting in the Asia-Pacific region.
The campaign was implemented in stages: On February 9, 2026, in anticipation of the WRD,
AMARC Asia-Pacific focused on the ethical use of AI in community radio. AMARC Asia-
Pacific reaffirmed that AI should strengthen, not replace human judgement, editorial
responsibility and community participation in community radio. Ethical, transparent and
inclusive use of AI can enhance content quality, accessibility and trust, especially for community and local broadcasters working closest to their audiences. On February 10, 2026, the Association concentrated on capacity-building. Under the slogan “Learning today to protect truth tomorrow,” it sought to emphasize the importance of fact- checking, research, and responsible use of AI.
In an era characterized by the rapid spread of misinformation, AMARC Asia-Pacific has
dedicated considerable resources towards enhancing fact-checking capacity of its members. This strategic investment significantly strengthens their ability to provide accurate and relevant
information to their listeners. By prioritizing the development of editorial skills, the Association
demonstrates its commitment to transitioning from awareness to action. On the 11th of February, the campaign introduced an engaging element by juxtaposing a human
voice and an AI-generated voice. Followers on social media were invited to identify the two
voices correctly.
On the 12th of February, the campaign focused on introducing user-friendly AI tools for
community broadcasters. The campaign highlighted AI tools that are useful for text-to-speech
and speech-to-text conversions, voice improvement and removal, music creation, and song
generation. The campaign emphasized that while AI tools are not entirely free to use, they can be a force for good in the community radio sector if used responsibly.
On the 13th of February, in a video to reinforce its message, AMARC Asia-Pacific reiterated that
while AI is changing the world, building and maintaining trust remains a fundamental human responsibility. The video highlighted the Association’s support for community radios through
capacity-building initiatives and partnerships aimed at strengthening the position of community radios as a trusted and safe space for the communities.
This year, on World Radio Day 2026, AMARC Asia-Pacific underscored the emerging
relationship between community broadcasting and AI. The campaign emphasized the need for
increased vigilance and inclusivity in the era of AI.
