The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has organized a Regional Media Workshop on the Environment in Asia Pacific: Communicating the Issues in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED), and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).

The workshop will be held on 18-21 November 2012 in Kathmandu, Nepal. It is also supported by the The Third Pole Network, the China Dialogue, and the Philippine Network of Environmental Journalists, Inc. (PNEJ).

Interested media participants must submit stories and ideas on how they will report on the environment on a topic of interest and relevance either to their countries, subregion, or the Asia Pacific region. This could, but is not limited to any of the following issues:

  • the green economy in the region
  • marine issues
  • climate change
  • sustainable consumption and production
  • poverty and environment

Between 20 or 30 media with the best selected ideas will participate in the workshop. From these participants, the 10 best ideas will be selected and will be awarded with a 3-month fellowship grant of US$5,000

The Asia-Pacific Development Communication Centre (ADCC), Thailand will conduct a 10-day communication for development training course from November 19 to 30, 2012.

This 10-day course is intended to clarify the concepts of ComDev by focusing on analyzing risk behaviours related to health and how to induce behaviour change through strategic communication. Emphasis will be on how cultural, social, economic and political factors influence the individual’s choices and behaviour in relation to health, prevention of diseases and health seeking behaviours.

Programme/project managers, development practitioners and those who are involved in communication for development projects are welcome to participate.

Training fee is USD 2,200 inclusive of tuition, course materials, airport pick up and drop off, tea/coffee/lunch during the training days.

The Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) is looking for film producers to explore two critical issues on Climate Compatible Development in the Asian region, and to capture and communicate learning from flagship projects underway:

  1. Migration and climate change in Asia (with particular focus on Bangladesh)
  2. Gender and climate change in Asia (with particular focus on India)

The primary audience of the 1-2 short films will be national policy-makers and stakeholders and the focus will be to explore the issue itself, profile the new insights and evidence obtained from CDKN’s research projects and ultimately raise awareness of the need for action. The supplier will be expected to manage the design and production of the film including different short and language versions, as well as the dissemination, follow-up and M&E of the film.

The project is expected to last between 8 and 14 months starting in late November 2012. Successful bidders will need to satisfy the following requirements:

  • Must have considerable experience producing professional documentary films in developing countries which have received widespread attention and acclaim nationally and internationally
  • In-depth knowledge of the subject area, and climate change and development in general, with the capacity to refine the central message of the film and design a film which will raise awareness and challenge perceptions
  • Experience working in the focus country and contacts with key Government officials and stakeholders
  • Excellent contacts with key national and international stakeholders working on the subject area and ability to forge partnerships and ensure the widespread dissemination of the film
  • Excellent marketing and communication skills that will ensure the film produced receives widespread attention

The International Conference on Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation for Food and Environmental Security will be held on November 21-22, 2012 at the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB), Laguna, Philippines.

Organized by UPLB and SEARCA, the Conference aims to bring together researchers, academicians, policy makers and planners, development workers, NGOs and other professionals in the region in a discussion forum for the exchange and updating of information, as well as integration and forging of linkages towards enhanced regional capacity to achieve food, environmental, nutritional and health security in the face of climate change.

The registration fee is USD 200 which covers conference meals, materials, and campus shuttle (accommodation and airport transfers not included). There will also be a post-conference field trip in the Southern Tagalog Region, Philippines on November 23, 2012 which requires an additional USD 40.
